Holistic Hands Cwmbran – A Review

Having felt totally stressed out now that I’ve started working full time, attending gymnastics classes, parents evenings etc etc I was desperate for some me time. Having never been for any type of massage before I contacted Jade at Holistic Hands Cwmbran and asked her what she suggested. She gave me a few different options but the aromatherapy back, neck and shoulder massage stood out so I booked in.

The day came and although I felt a bit nervous I was also excited, I always feel a bit awkward when going somewhere new and have been known to put off appointments because of it but this time I was determined to see it through. Once there I was greeted with a smile in a lovely calm, clean and tidy room. I was asked to fill in a form of my personal details any medications, illnesses or allergies and what I was hoping to get from the treatment. As I was hoping to feel less stressed she mixed up 3 oils with the carrier oil after asking me if there were any I didn’t particularly like, lavender in my case – hate the stuff!! Jade also gave me some info on what the different oils were for.

Hollistic Hands Cwmbran Treatment Room

She asked me after adding each one if I liked it so she could be sure I would like the smell of the overall product, once we were happy with the oils I was asked to remove the top half of my clothing, to lie on the bed face down with the blanket provided over me.

Jade then popped on some really relaxing music and the low lighting made for a really relaxing experience. The oil smelled amazing and Jade asked me if the pressure was ok during the massage to ensure I got the most from the experience. I felt myself relaxing the whole time.

Once the massage was over Jade asked me to lie there for a few minutes to come round, (was tempted to drag it out to a few hours but didn’t want to outstay my welcome) before popping my clothes back on and coming out to the reception desk where she would be waiting for me. I was presented with a bottle of water as I was advised I could be a bit dehydrated and also told I may find I experience a headache or feel cold. Luckily I didn’t have any of these symptoms and still felt really relaxed all evening.

My particular massage cost £20 (worth every penny) and there are a whole host of other treatments available including Facials, Indian Head Massage, Pregnancy and Sports Massage or you could even treat a loved one to some relaxation, I was so pleased with the massage I have rebooked and even booked to have my nails done in the adjoining IHeart Studio as I’d felt so welcome and at ease.

If you fancy popping along you can book via Facebook here.

Solar Buddies Sunscreen Applicator Review

If you have a child in nursery or school you’ll know that when your child goes to school the teachers aren’t allowed to apply sunscreen to them and if you’re anything like me you’ll worry that just putting sunscreen on in the morning before they go won’t be enough to protect their sensitive skin. I’ve seen plenty of children coming out of school on hot days with red faces and burnt noses or worse.

If there was a product that a child could use to do it themselves wouldn’t that just be amazing? Well good news! The Solar Buddies  sunscreen applicator is award winning, easy to use, child friendly and the brainchild of two Mums – Laura and Kelli who wanted to help children / teachers to be able to apply sunscreen and still comply with the no touch policy that schools adhere to.

It comes as an empty unit for you to use your own sunscreen because obviously one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to sun protection. Both my younger children are fair haired and skinned so I like to use a high factor 50 on them. All you need to do is pull off the lid, unscrew the roller ball head then squeeze your chosen sunscreen into the yellow pot. Screw the head back on and away you go.

The Solar Buddies applicator combines a roller ball and sponge for smooth and easy application with no mess, no spillage and is economical as there’s no wastage. We all know sunscreen can be quite expensive. The chunky design means it’s great for small hands to use and is really simple for children which means it can be added to school bags for them to top up whilst at school or out and about. solar-buddies-sunscreen-applicator-inside-view

They are refillable and hold 100ml of sunscreen so you don’t have to lug whole bottles around with you, especially annoying if all family members use a different type of sunscreen.

My daughter is 4 and as always ready to help with my reviews so here she is demonstrating how she uses her Solar Buddies applicator.

I have no doubt that she and her brother are confident in using it so I can rest easy knowing that their skin will be protected even when I’m not there to do it. I just need to remind them each morning to put it on at break and lunch times. There is a space on the applicator for you to write the child (or adults) name on so there’s no problems with getting them mixed up. They are small and light so won’t be heavy in their bags.

The Solar Buddies applicators can be washed out and it’s recommended that the bottle and sponge unit are cleaned and dried thoroughly before re-using. It’s best to not to allow sand into the applicator where possible as this can affect it’s efficacy so rub down the skin before use. During times of constant use the sponge unit should be replaced every 2/3 months.

You can purchase them as a single  which is RRP £8.99 or there are many options such as combining with replacement heads .You can also purchase one of their lovely beach ready packs, choose from Disney Princess, Spider-Man and Star Wars. Each pack contains: 1 Drawstring Beach Bag, 1 Baseball Cap, 1 Beachball and 1 Drinks Bottle – all the essentials for a day at the beach (Solar Buddies applicators are not included in these packs but are ideal for carrying a Solar Buddies applicator already purchased).

Overall we think that Solar Buddies Sunscreen Applicators are a must have for applying sunscreen, they are a revelation and there’s no more of that “Mum, get off me” nonsense you usually get when trying to get the wrigglers to stand still and put it on. Instead you’ll have kids all proud as punch to be doing it for themselves.

Pharmaton Vitality Capsules Review

Being a parent can be tiring in itself , add in the housework, maybe a job and some days you can be left feeling absolutely exhausted. It’s always nice to know there’s a little help on hand when you need it. I’ve been giving  Pharmaton Vitality Capsules a try for 30 days to see if it can help me enjoy my little parenting wins.

Pharmaton Vitality Capsules contain a balanced combination of standardised Ginseng extract G115, vitamins and minerals needed to relieve symptoms of tiredness leaving you feeling mentally and physically alert! Pharmaton Vitality capsules have been proven to enhance energy levels in over 30 clinical trials and can be used for:

  • Relief of short periods of daily fatigue associated with a busy, hectic lifestyle. Symptoms of daily fatigue include temporary periods of exhaustion (for example caused by stress), tiredness, and a feeling of weakness or lack of vitality (loss of energy).
  • Prevention and treatment of symptoms caused by an unbalanced diet.
  • Pharmaton Vitality Capsules work by enhancing mental and physical performance through the combined action of Ginseng G115, vitamins and minerals on the basic.metabolic processes.

The capsules themselves are fairly large but not overly so and they are very smooth so easy to swallow.  They have no horrible aftertaste which is always a bonus. Memories of my Mum making me take cod liver oil come flooding back… I found it easiest to take the recommended 1 capsule with my breakfast to make it easier to remember, I’m awful at remembering tablets. It also meant I took it on a full stomach and had no side effects at all. I found them to be really helpful at keeping me going during a stressful week where my daughter had the dreaded chicken pox as she wasn’t sleeping very well and as she was off school wanted a lot more attention than she usually does. It felt like the longest week ever but they gave me the extra oomph I needed to get through.

My little parenting wins are:

  • My kids always eating their vegetables and enjoying them.
  • The littles staying in bed, once they finally go to sleep they do tend to stay there all night.
  • My middle child recently developing a love for reading, something I hoped they all would.
  • Finally finding the Holy Grail of school shoes that my daughter hasn’t destroyed within days!

The less said about the teenager the better however 😀 If you’re feeling shattered and could do with a bit of a pick-me-up it’s well worth giving these a try to see if they can help give you your pep back.

Pharmaton Vitality Capsules are available for £9.45 for 30 at Boots

Feeling Better Kid Style With #VicksTricks

It’s Winter, it’s cold and the kids are forever picking up something. It can be quite miserable for everyone involved when they do. Britmums have set a Vicks Tricks challenge and asked us bloggers to chat about the things we do to help our little ones feel better when they are poorly.

When my children aren’t feeling 100% I try to get them smiling again, to take their minds off feeling rotten. To help us along the way we also received a goody bag from Britmums which included the lovely bedtime book  ‘The Rabbit who wants to fall asleep’ some cute finger puppets, some all-important Vicks First Defence and some magic tricks videos you can try at home as you can see below.

Vicks have conducted some consumer research, which looks at British parents most common at home remedies. Here are the key findings:
• Over half (52%) of parents said that rest was the most important thing for making children feel better
• This was followed by ‘medicine’, which 40% of parents rely on
• More than a third of parents (36%) believe in the power of TLC
And when it comes to keeping children entertained:
• Three out of four (75%) British parents put on the TV or a DVD
• Over a quarter (27%) read to their children
• 1 in 10 parents get really creative; either telling jokes (8%) or even do magic tricks (2%)
Family Psychologist Corinne Sweet highlights that “one of the most powerful antidotes to sickness developing further, is parental care and concern.”
Corinne advises that “listening to a story or watching a film is a good idea, as it is soothing and promotes laughter (an immune booster). But don’t let them play video games, watch scary films or spend hours on screens. This will keep their minds over-stimulated, when their immune systems need gentler stimulation and rest.”

The ways I try to help when my children have a cold are:

  1. Get the duvets downstairs, snuggle up nice and warm.
  2. Put a great Disney movie on or some funny cartoons – we love Adventure Time, Clarence and Gumball. All great for a good giggle, guaranteed to make anyone feel better.
  3. Good old Vicks Original Vaporub, rub on the chest and my Mum swears on the sole of the feet. Says it always worked for us when we were little and so it’s a tradition that has carried on. You’d know the smell of it anywhere! Definitely helps you breathe easier.
  4. A cuddle from their favourite soft toy. For my son it’s Luigi (obsessed with Mario Bros that one) and for my daughter Bebe the puppy.
  5. Vicks First Defence spray is brilliant for when you spot the signs of 1 of them coming down with something you can get the rest of the family using it to stop the cold before it gets any worse.
  6. Making handwashing and fun with some really bright coloured yummy smelling handwashes.
  7. Lots of cuddles and reading books together, makes sure they relax and you get to spend some quality time together. It can be hard to get to sleep when you’re all bunged up so The Rabbit who wants to go to sleep is a great book to try and help them drift off.
  8. Nice warm drinks, mine really like some hot chocolate. None of them like honey so we can’t try a hot honey and lemon drink although other children would enjoy it i’m sure.

This post is an entry for the #VicksTricks campaign.

Redoxon Vitamins Review

Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a decent helping of stress and someone always has a cold don’t they? Always. The lovely people at Redoxon sent me a gorgeous hamper of products to help make sure we were all fighting fit (well the kids definitely have the ‘fighting’ bit sorted).

We were sent:

  • Redoxon® Triple Action Effervescent Tablets
  • Redoxon® Immune Support Every Day
  • Redoxon® Triple Action Gummies

Redoxon® Triple Action Effervescent Tablets

They contain a combination of vitamin D, C and Zinc to help maintain your immune system and are suitable for adults and children over 12 years of age. The tablets fizzed up quickly in just a small amount of water – great if you’re short on time in the morning – and have a pleasant orange taste. The tablets come in a resealable plastic tube to keep them fresh and the lid isn’t easily removed so kids wouldn’t readily be able to get into it. Although I do keep my medicines in a high cupboard out of the way. I will also say that if you do partake in a bit of the old ‘festive spirit’ then these are just the thing to get you feeling a bit more human again. Certainly worked for me. They are also sugar free, always good. They come as a tube of 10.

Redoxon® Immune Support Every Day

Redoxon Every Day is an effervescent multivitamin which contains Vitamin C, Selenium, Zinc and Vitamins B6, B9 & B12 and is free from lactose, wheat and yeast. They are suitable for adults and children over the age of 12. Christmas can be hectic and running around a lot can take its toll which makes these ideal for boosting your immune system everyday. As I said earlier there are always coughs and colds hanging about so it doesn’t hurt to give your body a helping hand. As with the Triple Action tablets you just need to dissolve 1 in a small amount of water to make an orange flavoured drink. They come as packs of 2 tubes of 15 so the pack of 30 is ideal to last you for the month as you only need 1 tablet dissolved in water per day.

Redoxon® Triple Action Gummies

These lovely little fruit shaped gummies come in three tasty fun flavours (orange, strawberry and papaya) and are a high strength combination of Vitamins C & D plus Zinc for children 4 years and up. They come in resealable packs of 25. I had no trouble getting the children to try these, as they tasted like the fruit they resemble – although I did think the yellow one was going to be lemon flavoured rather then papaya until I tried it!

  • Children 4-8 years old have 2 gummies per day
  • Children 9-13 years old have 3 gummies per day
  • Adults & Teens over 14 have 4 gummies per day

  • Vitamin D helps your immune system function- your body’s natural protector
  • Vitamin C contributes to normal energy yielding metabolism and can help support your immune system
  • Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin
  • Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, of normal muscle function and of normal teeth

So if you’re not a fan of traditional pill form vitamins either the effervescent tablets or the gummies would make an ideal substitute for you to get all the the benefits above and more. All the extra treats, chocolate and nibbles mean that your 5 a day might go out of the window and these Redoxon products fit the bill perfectly for redressing the balance.

Redoxon® products are available at a range of stores including Boots, Sainsbury’s, Superdrug, Tesco, and Waitrose. Redoxon® Every Day come in packs of 15 (RRP £5.00) and 30 (RRP £9.50), the Triple Action gummies come in packs of 25 at a RRP of £2.49, and the Triple Action effervescent tablets are available in packs of 10 at a RRP of £3.80

Throaty Soothe For Children

Throaty Soothe is a new sore throat syrup for children that we were kindly sent to try out. Winter brings with it all manner of coughs and colds and it’s hard to know sometimes what to give the kids to help relieve the symptoms. For us adults there’s a whole host of different products we can take, different formulas, powders, tablets and more. So I was very interested when sent some information about Throaty Soothe and wanted to give it a try.

Throaty Soothe is a syrup made with natural ingredients:

Icelandic Moss

A natural ingredient used to treat sore throats and dry, non-productive coughs. An irritation soothing effect comes from it’s mucins which coat the tissues lining the mouth and throat like a balm.

Mallow extract

A flowering plant used to treat irritation to the tissues lining the mouth and throat and the associated sore throat and dry non productive cough. The leaves and flowers contain mucins which relieve iritation.

An essential trace element, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is vital for healthy immune function.

It has a dual action formula, which soothes and protects, and because they physically target the site of soreness and contain no paracetamol, they are safe to use in combination with other medicines if needed. It’s a sugar free formulation with a delicious cherry flavour, which can be given to children from the age of 12 months. It comes in a non drip 100ml bottle and has a measuring cup provided (on top of the bottle) so you can give the right amount each time.It also contains no artificial colours.

Whilst my children had a cough/cold we tried this syrup with them and I was pleased that it did help to soothe the symptoms. They took it no problem as they both liked the taste and the measuring cup meant it wasn’t a game of get it in their mouth before they spill the contents of the spoon everywhere – I once dropped a bottle of red medicine whilst trying to get my daughter to take it and it wasn’t a good look!! As suggested on the leaflet inside the pack we kept up the dosage for a few days afterwards too to ensure the symptoms were gone.

Throaty Soothe is also available as strawberry flavoured Lozenges which are great to use on the go. They are suitable for children aged four and older and are available in packs of 24.

So if you’re looking for something to help ease the misery of a cough or sore throat for your little one it’s definitely worth giving this a try.

RRP: £6.99 from Tesco Stores, Tesco.com and Amazon

Feel Stress Free App Review

Feel Stress Free  is an app created by Thrive which:

  • Keeps track of your mood over time
  • Enables you to train your thoughts so you can manage how you feel about different situations
  • Trains you in 4 relaxation techniques that give you control over your stress

which can help over time to make sure you some time out, de-stress and forget about the world for a little while. I was offered a months trial to see what I thought of it.

I downloaded the app from the App store and it’s a very user friendly appealing app with a lovely beach theme aptly named ‘Calm Isle’ which immediately makes you think of a relaxing holiday with waves lapping on the shore and some calming music complete with sounds of water and seagulls. All you need to use it is sound headphones and a quiet room somewhere.

There are options which are open and some that unlock as you go along. My favourite was the breathing because it made me sit in a room by myself without distractions and just relax whilst the main focus was on my breathing instead of worrying about everything just for a little while. I felt refreshed and ready to take on anything ( usually the kids pummeling the hell out of each other).

You can choose how long you want to do each activity for, which is great if you don’t have an awful lot of time or if you do have a bit of ‘me time’ you can use it for longer. The little dude you can see in the top left breathes along with you so it’s visual as well as being able to hear the instructions from a very calm sounding voice. It did take a bit of getting used to as I felt a bit daft to start with but then I realised I was doing this for me and no one else could even see me anyway so it didn’t actually matter!

There are lots of options if you move around the Isle by swiping left or right including:

  • Breathing
  • Meditation
  • Deep Muscle
  • Self Hypnosis
  • Message
  • Progress
  • Mood Meter
  • Zen Garden

The mood meter is handy as it can suggest activities based on how you’re feeling, the more you use it the better it gets at suggestions. The Zen garden lets you make your own little garden on the beach. It just makes you relax and forget about the days stresses for a while.

I found that this app worked well for me after a long day either with the kids or at work as it just gave me a chance to stop, relax and chill out a bit. Something I wouldn’t really have done before.

Each time you use the app you need to log in so your progress is saved and there’s a subscription fee of £4.99 a month for full use and cheaper options if you sign up for longer periods.

Thrive also do an ‘Arachnophobia Free’ App which I’m sure many people (including myself) would benefit from. Been finding the mini beasts all over the place lately!

Haymax Kids Allergen Barrier Balm Review

More children than adults suffer from hay fever; around 30% of all children in the UK suffer from the allergy, compared to 20% of adults. HayMax allergen barrier balms provide an effective defence against grass pollen; they can be used by children from birth and are proven in independent studies to trap pollen grains before they enter the body.

With the warmer weather (well sometimes) comes the dreaded hayfever season which we are right in now. My daughter always starts the day around this time of year coughing and sneezing and rubbing her eyes. Anyone who suffers hayfever knows how miserable it can be so when I saw Haymax Allergen Barrier Balm I asked if they would send me some to review as I thought it sounded great for my 4 year old daughter. I hate having to dose her up with medicine every morning which makes her feel a bit sleepy.

Haymax Kids Balm is an award winning organic drug-free allergen barrier balm based on beeswax and sunflower oil which is designed to trap pollen before it gets into the body and causes the allergic reaction. People who suffer from hayfever can only tolerate a certain amount of pollen before they start to react. All you have to do is apply the balm around the rim of the nostrils and the bones of your eyes and it helps trap the pollen.

HayMax is drug-free and the ingredients have been chosen to be suitable for children of all ages, and pregnant and breast-feeding women which is ideal – I wish it had been around when I was pregnant the first time I suffered horribly with it then and felt it would never end when I couldn’t take my usual anti – histamine.

It comes in a little 5ml pot which looks and feels very much like a lip balm. You might think ‘well that’s so small it won’t last long!’ But you only need a small amount to rub on which means the pot will last ages – up to 6 months. It can be reapplied as many times as you like to make sure you have all day/evening coverage. I applied it at night too if the window was open just in case. It didn’t sting or upset my daughter’s skin and she didn’t get any kind of reaction to it. It also doesn’t have a noticeable smell.

I am very pleased with it as it does help to stop the symptoms of the hayfever for my daughter. She’s quite happy ( alright nagged me) to do it for herself so I showed her how to and she does it easily so with her starting reception in September, come next Summer she can pop one in her school bag to use if she needs to.

HayMax organic drug-free allergen barrier balms retail at £6.99 per pot and are available from Holland & Barrett, selected Morrisons, Waitrose and Boots, independent health stores, chemists and pharmacies, on 01525 406600 and on-line at haymax.biz.

Holland and Barrett Children’s Vitamins Review

The kids have been trying out a range of Free From Children’s Vitamins from Holland & Barrett. The ones we were kindly sent were:

· Holland and Barrett Healthy Kids Multivitamins plus Omega 3 30 Softies £4.99
· Seven Seas Haliborange Fruit Softies Capsules £4.59
· Jelly Bears Multivitamins – Summer Berry £6.99
· Jelly Bears Zinc Orange £6.99

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The vitamins are free from a range of ingredients including:
· Crustaceans
· Fish
· Eggs
· Nuts
· Lupin

Since my daughter has a dairy allergy I do worry that she isn’t getting all the goodness from her food that she could be so a vitamin gives me peace of mind that she’s getting a ‘top-up’. I was pleased to see that none of these vitamins contained milk either.

The great thing about all the vitamins we tried were that they were soft and fruit flavoured none of your nasty cod liver oil in a bottle type stuff, remember that? Bleurgh. This meant that I had no problems getting the children to take them.

All the vitamins are suitable for children aged 3+ . With the Healthy Kids Multivitamins Plus Omega 3 you can take 1 a day, all the others you can either take 1 or 2.

I’m quite happy with an all round multivitamin to cover all angles, the Healthy Kids MultiVitamins also contain Omega 3 which contributes to the normal function of the heart, vision and brain function.

The orange Jelly Bears contain Zinc which is good for the immune system so may be a good choice if your little one is due to start nursery in September. As we all know kids pick up everything going when they start mixing!

I would be quite happy to buy any of these vitamins as my children liked them all however they did show a preference towards the Haliborange Multivitamin Fruit Softies which were strawberry shaped and flavoured.

We did really like the plastic bear shaped pots that the Jelly Bears came in and will keep them for putting something else in. We were careful to keep the vitamins out of the way of little hands and eyes though as they can be dangerous if too many are taken.

Pharma Nord Bio-Chromium and BIOmega-3 Kids Review

Anyone who knows me or has read my blog will know I’m a bit of a naughty sugar fiend!I was contacted by Pharma Nord to review some products and as luck would have it Bio-Chromium was one that they offered to send me to try along with Kids BIOmega-3 fish oil capsules.

I’ve heard of Chromium before but in all honesty wouldn’t have had a clue what it was used for so had to read up on it and as soon as I realised what it was I jumped at the chance to review it as it is to help with blood sugar control. As sugar has had a big focus in the media recently and I have been worried about my intake it seemed daft not to give them a go!

Bio-Chromium Chromo Precise

Bio-Chromium is proven to maintain normal blood sugar levels therefore reducing cravings for sweets, snacks and junk food, It also helps to convert fat, carbs and protein into energy making it an ideal choice for slimmers!

The tablets themselves are easy to take – the instructions state 1-2 tablets per day with food and come in a blister pack.I have only been taking 1 as I haven’t yet felt the need to take 2 and thought if 1 was enough then I could add in the 2nd one later should I wish to.I did notice after a few days that I wasn’t getting that sicky, dizzy feeling I get mid afternoon where I raid the fridge for chocolate or run to the cake shop near work.

I haven’t really been actively trying to lose weight (although believe me – I should) but by taking Chromium and getting back into the school run by walking I have actually lost 6lbs in 3 weeks!I’m actually very surprised at that as I didn’t feel I’d made an awful lot of effort so it got me thinking…what could you actually achieve it you went all out and followed a healthier diet and added in some excercise?

I will definitely be continuing taking the Chromium as I feel a lot better in myself not getting the sugar cravings.Obviously I have eaten things with sugar in but I haven’t had the urge to eat chocolate by the bucketload like I normally would.

BIOmega-3 Kids fish oil capsules

Studies indicate that supplementation with fish oil can help improve children’s learning ability and behaviour

I tried these with my 6 year old as we’ve been enjoying the summer off and the panic sets in that they will have forgotten everything so thought these would be ideal to help him get back into it he also suffers with very mild eczema occasionally so thought these would also help with that.

The capsules do appear to quite large but then I find a lot of the fish oil type ones do so as they were lemon flavour I thought I would first give him the chance to take it himself by chewing it.Unfortunately he didn’t like the taste and whilst his face was a picture (naughty Mummy) I felt it wouldn’t do him any good to force him so changed to breaking the capsules onto his food instead. You can also break the capsule and give with a spoon.

One thing I have noticed is that his skin doesn’t appear to be quite as dry as it was before and his concentration levels do seem good at the moment too.We will keep up the daily intake of these and I think it would be a good idea to get the Adult version for my 17 year old, myself and hubby as I do get some joint pain and the teen is always a bit lethargic!

Other Pharma Nord products can be purchased online at MultiVits. BIOmega-3 kids here and Bio-Chromium here.
